What’s Microlearning?

Microlearning is learning that works!

Microlearning has been around for several years now. In fact, if you have ever watched a short video on YouTube, then you have participated in microlearning! Other examples include following Twitter feeds, gamification and even reading a text message!

Microlearning is many things and its concept is still evolving. But some common characteristics of microlearning include:

  • Small learning units
  • Short-term learning activities
  • Usually part of a larger learning goal
  • Informal (takes place when convenient to learner)
  • Often conducted while multitasking
  • Frequently entertains the learner (“edutainment”)

In general, microlearning typically occurs online and lasts for five minutes or less. The objective is simple: Deliver training in smaller, more digestible chunks to make it easier to reach a broader learning goal.

And it works! Studies show that breaking up learning into smaller segments actually encourages employees to participate in longer, more in depth training later.
